the Moses Basket Initiative!
The Moses Basket Initiative is overseen by Mrs. Phyllis Thiong’o. Phyllis reaches out to local communities around Nairobi, Kenya, and identifies teenage girls at high risk for exploitation, sexual abuse, or early pregnancy. She is passionate about her community-based programs that teach feminine hygiene, pregnancy prevention, and good motherhood skills. She also advocates for teenage mothers who have been turned away from school due to their unplanned pregnancy.
In addition, Phyllis works in the village of Malindi where situations of child bride marriage are extremely high. She is currently working to build a safe house and daycare center within the village limits so that they can find assistance in critical situations and have an option for childcare while they start or continue their education. She is also overseeing Serita’s Safe House in Nairobi, a place for young girls to come when the risk of repeat marriage is so high that the girls need refugee outside the village.
Donations go to efforts to provide female health education, parenting education, baby baskets and needed care products as well as sanitary towel distribution.
We were fortunate enough to meet Phyllis in person during our visit to Kenya in 2020 prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. As you can imagine, the pandemic placed many things on hold, including Phyllis’s community outreach.
By God’s mercy, we have been able to visit with her again since the end of the pandemic and are working to build a bigger and brighter future for all.
The needs are the same as pre-pandemic, but the urgency is greater. Your giving today will make a huge impact on their tomorrow!
Help Us Furnish A Safe Haven For Vulnerable Teenage Girls and Their Babies!
Breaking the cycle of abuse sometimes necessitates separating the abused from their abuser. In the case of child bride marriage, it is critical to provide a safe haven for these vulnerable young girls and their children to go. In this environment, they are able to regain their dignity, re-start their education, and look toward a brighter future. With our partners at United MegaCare, we are working with the Moses Basket Initiative to provide such a place.
